Compounded medications are essential to provide effective therapy in many cases; however, they aren’t without their risks. There are some dosage forms or drugs that are lower risk than others, but in reality, any dosage form and medication combo could be made to a very high-quality standard or a very low-quality standard. Some dosage forms, like transdermal, are highly desired by clients due to ease of administration but have unpredictable efficacy. Other dosage forms are difficult to prepare, thus increasing the risk of a poor-quality compound. An important predictor of quality is the quality of the compounding pharmacy, but this can often be difficult to determine. This session will go through what makes a dosage form high risk, some additional considerations about transdermal compounds, and what to look for in a compounding pharmacy.
